GMS is the service provider for your maritime asset in terms of providing observational data of importance for maritime safety.
The GMS service family represents risk and cost reduction services for the shipping industry based on a simple (low-cost) data distribution ship-borne platform that is integrated with the onboard ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and Information System), or eventually the ship's conning station. ECDIS is a computer-based navigation information system that complies with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) regulations. It displays the information from electronic navigational charts (ENC) and integrates position information from the Global Positioning System (GPS) and other navigational sensors, such as radar and automatic identification systems (AIS). It may also display additional safety-related information if connected with the GMS PlatformTM. The GMS PlatformTM mainly communicates with an onshore data distribution reciprocity, which is connected with a large number of data feeds. It may further connect with the data communication network onboard a ship.
The unique real-time access to a large amount of offshore, ship and satellite observations collected and fused in the ‘online’ data distribution reciprocity, provides the opportunity to offer numerous integrated data services.
“The benefits for the ship owners, charterer, and sea masters of having a GMS data distribution platform onboard are apparent, if one calculates the probability of the total cost of an incident in relation to the relatively small cost of a GMS platform, or a ship fuel cost reduction in relation to the data distribution cost of the service.” (said an International Maritime Organisation (IMO) delegate)
